What's Inside Our Folk Music Book for Toddlers
When we created the Pirouette Kids folk music book, we wanted to make something that felt like a singalong around a campfire—but designed for toddlers. Our I Discover Folk Music book features six timeless American folk songs adapted for little listeners, with easy-to-press sound buttons and charming illustrations that bring the music to life. These songs have stood the test of time, and introducing them early helps build musical memory, emotional connection, and cultural awareness—even before preschool.
But what makes these songs special? And how did we pick them? Let’s take a closer look inside the book.
🎵 Oh! Susanna
A classic for a reason. Oh! Susanna kicks things off with joyful strumming, a bouncy beat, and lyrics that are easy for toddlers to echo.
We chose this as the opener for its upbeat energy—it sets the tone for a toe-tapping journey through traditional American folk. The melody is catchy and light, and even if your little one doesn’t sing along, they’ll definitely bop along.
🌻 This Land Is Your Land

It’s also a lovely opportunity to talk about nature and geography with your toddler in simple terms—something we reflect in the open, colorful landscape spread that accompanies this song.
💃 Little Liza Jane
One of the most danceable tracks in the book. Little Liza Jane is short, rhythmic, and full of bounce. The repetition and rhyme make it ideal for toddlers just starting to explore music and language.
This one invites wiggling, clapping, and pure fun—and the dancing duck illustration might just become your child’s favorite character.
🧵 Sarasponda
Not every song in this book is a chart-topper—and that’s on purpose. Sarasponda is a lesser-known folk tune, believed to have originated as a Dutch spinning song.
It’s rhythmic and delightfully strange—just the kind of thing kids love. We added this to expose children to new sounds and sillier syllables like “sarasponda, sarasponda, sarasponda ret set set”—perfect for language development and giggles alike.
✨ This Little Light of Mine
One of the sweetest and most meaningful songs in the folk tradition. This Little Light of Mine is all about confidence and kindness. It has a strong, repetitive structure that makes it easy for toddlers to follow and join in.
In our book, the illustration shows a joyful animal parade with each creature holding a glowing lantern—an invitation to shine their own light.
🏜️ Home on the Range
A peaceful, open-hearted cowboy lullaby that brings a gentle moment of calm to the middle of the book. With its slow pace and wide prairie imagery, it offers a sense of freedom and stillness—perfect for winding down.
Why a Folk Music Book for Toddlers?
Folk music is storytelling, repetition, and community—all things toddlers thrive on. It introduces little ones to rhythm and rhyme, builds vocabulary, and opens a window into cultural traditions.
Each song in our folk music book for toddlers was chosen for its energy, musicality, and developmental value. And because each tune is under 15 seconds, it keeps little ones engaged without overwhelming them.
